chapter 1

POV Katherine

"Remember," Mother hissed against my ear, "sweet and gentle. We've been back three months, but our position is still precarious. One wrong move, one sharp word, and we could lose everything we've worked for."

"Yes, Mother."

The words fell from my lips like drops of poison honey, each syllable a small death of who I really was.

I stood just inside the entrance of The Blackstone Pack's great hall, my modest blue dress a calculated surrender to propriety. My mother's fingers bit into my arm with familiar cruelty.

"Fix your posture. Not too straight—you're not challenging anyone. But not slouched—you're not weak after all."

Her hands yanked at my shoulders, adjusting me like a doll.

"And for the love of the Moon Goddess, if any of the ranked wolves speak to you, you defer. Always defer."

I nodded, letting her attack a strand of hair that had dared escape my bun.

Around us, pack members flowed through their social circles with the ease of belonging. We stood apart—not quite pariahs anymore, but far from accepted.

The precarious space between exile and pack.

"I need to speak with other she-wolves about the upcoming charity auction." Mother's eyes already hunted through the crowd for the Alpha's mother. "Stay visible but unobtrusive. Make yourself useful without being presumptuous."

She abandoned me without a backward glance. I moved toward the refreshment table, each step a performance of grace, my face arranged into pleasant emptiness.

This mask had become my second skin—the sweet smile that never touched my soul, the submissive tilt that screamed 'I am nothing, I am no threat, I am yours to command.'

If only someone knew how I hate that shit…

"Well, if it isn't the prodigal Beta's daughter." The voice sliced through the air like a challenge. "Still playing the innocent lamb, I see."

I turned slowly, my practiced smile already poisoning my face. Nate lounged against a pillar, his dark eyes glittering with malicious amusement.

Everything about him screamed arrogance—from his deliberately loosened tie to the way he wielded his whiskey glass like a threat.

"Beta Williams," I said, dipping my head in the required deference. "How lovely to see you this evening."

"Cut the act, Winters." He shoved off from the pillar, stalking toward me with predatory intent. "We both know there's more going on behind those pretty eyes than this helpless maiden routine you're selling."

"I'm not sure what you mean…"

My voice maintained its honeyed submission even as my fingers strangled the punch ladle I'd just grabbed. His smirk widened, and he invaded my space, while his voice dropped to an intimate murmur.

"You watch everyone, cataloging their weaknesses, their alliances. You think no one notices, but I see you, princess. The real you. The one who's dying to tell me exactly where I can shove my observations."

My smile never cracked, though something feral flashed in my mind for one unguarded second.

"Thank you for the guidance, Beta Williams. I'm always grateful for the wisdom of our pack leadership."

"Oh c’mon, Gabriel's too smart to fall for the helpless act," Nate continued, swirling his whiskey with deliberate menace. "Maybe try having an actual personality.”

The barb struck deep, but I'd been carved hollow by worse. I poured punch with steady hands, my movements a ballet of false serenity.

"Your concern for the Alpha's wellbeing is admirable. I'm sure he appreciates having such a protective Beta."

"I'm not protecting him." His eyes narrowed with dark pleasure. "I'm warning you. Whatever game you're playing, whatever your mother has planned with this return to the pack—Gabriel will see through it eventually. And when he does..."

The threat hung between us like a blade.

"Is there a problem here?"

Derek, one of the younger warriors, materialized at my elbow, his expression radiating concern.

"No problem at all," I said quickly, shoving the cup of punch at Derek. "Beta Williams was just offering me some advice about pack dynamics. So thoughtful of him."

Nate's laugh was low and knowing. "Yes, Miss Winters is an eager student. Aren't you, Katherine?"

"Always eager to learn," I agreed, my tone so perfectly sincere that Derek relaxed while Nate's smirk sharpened.

"Enjoy your evening, princess," Nate said, sketching a mocking bow before melting into the crowd.

The next hour was torture perfected into art. I fetched drinks for elderly pack members, listened to their stories with manufactured fascination, and served appetizers with calculated humility.

Every movement was choreographed submission. I was a ghost wearing a girl's face. Useful but forgettable, present but not real.

I was reaching for the punch ladle again when the very air changed.

Conversations died. Heads swiveled toward the entrance, and the crowd's anticipation became a living thing.

Alpha Gabriel Cross filled the doorway.

The man was a devastation wrapped in designer clothing—a charcoal Armani suit that was tailored to perfection across shoulders that had broken lesser wolves. His white dress shirt was crisp enough to cut, unbuttoned just enough to hint at the powerful chest beneath.

But it was his presence that truly commanded submission. Gabriel didn't walk—he prowled, each step calculated dominance.
