About this book

A plus-size freshman, Betty, moves to the city after her mom's death to live with her dad, stepmom, and stepsister, Stacey-the cheerleading captain. Leaving behind her best friend Brent. At her new university, she becomes the target of bullying after accidentally spilling a drink on Marcus Archibald, the arrogant basketball captain and Stacey's ex. Forced to partner with Marcus for a physics project, she discovers he's more complex than she thought. Just as she starts to let her guard down, Betty uncovers the painful truth that their growing bond was part of a cruel bet Marcus made with his friends.

Run Betty, Run

The sound of their laughter echoed behind me as I ran, my dress bunching up in my fists to keep from tripping.

"Fatty Betty! Where do you think you're going?"

Stacey’s voice cut through the air, sharp and full of venom. I didn’t dare look back. My chest was tight, my eyes blurred with tears. I just needed to get away — away from their taunts, away from this nightmare of a night.

"Yeah, run, Fatty Betty! Maybe you’ll lose some weight!" another voice called, followed by more laughter.

I rounded the corner, the hallway stretching out before me like an endless escape route. My breathing was ragged, and all I could hear was the pounding of my heart in my ears. But then I slammed into something solid, and for a second, I thought I’d collapse.

A hand gripped my arm, steadying me. I looked up, wiping furiously at my eyes. And froze.

Marcus Archibald. Captain of the basketball team. Stacey’s ex-friend. My nightmare.

He towered over me, his expression unreadable. The guy who, along with Stacey, made my life hell.

I yanked my arm away, stumbling backward, my heart racing for a whole new reason. “Dont freaking touch me.”

He didn’t answer. Without a word, he grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the elevator.

I tried to shake him off, but his grip was firm. “Marcus, let go!”

He didn’t stop. The elevator doors slid open, and he practically dragged me inside.

I pulled my wrist free, pressing myself against the far wall. My heart was pounding, and all I could think was how bad this would get.

“What are you doing?” I asked, breathless.

He didn’t answer right away, his eyes focused on the doors as they slid shut. “You’ll see.”

I edged toward the control panel, pressing the button for the next floor. I wasn’t sticking around to find out what game he was playing.

He took a step closer, and my heart leaped into my throat. “Your diary,” he said, his voice teasing, eyes gleaming with amusement.

“Is it true?” Marcus continued, taking another step forward, his gaze locking onto mine. “You like me?”

I pressed myself harder against the wall, my fingers trembling. “You have no right to ask about that, jerk!”

Marcus didn’t let me finish. He reached out, his hand hitting the stop button on the elevator, and the small space jerked to a halt. My pulse raced as the lights flickered, casting shadows across his face. He closed the gap between us, his face inches from mine, his breath warm against my skin. His eyes flicked to my lips, and without a word, he leaned in and kissed me.

For a split second, the world stopped. I didn’t know what was happening. Was this real? Or was it another twisted game? Was he just playing with me — again?
