About this book

My stepdad tricked me into a camping trip with no cell service. That night, I asked him to teach me what I'd never learned. He said yes. Now we're back home, pretending it never happened—while hiding a secret that could destroy us both.

Chapter 1

SCARLETT

I want to kill my stepfather Benjamin right now, and I actually think I might.

He told me we were going away for a daddy-daughter weekend while my mom’s out of town for work. And that was supposed to mean an all-inclusive resort with a killer spa. But he just stopped the car, and there isn’t a hotel building in sight.

In fact, there aren’t any buildings in sight. There are trees. Only trees. My piece of shit stepdad tricked me into going camping.

But what I hate most was outdoorsy. I can’t stand dirt, I don’t like getting sunburned, and even the thought of bugs makes me want to hurl.

Since he married my mother when i was eight years old, he's been trying to get me to appreciate the outdoors. He has pulled his fair share of stunts to try and convert me, but this is the farthest he has ever pushed the envelope.

“Are you fucking kidding me?” I hisses, staring at him so angry.

“Nope,” He reply, cutting the engine and stepping out of the jeep. “Welcome to paradise.”

“I’m not doing this. Take me home.”

“No can do,” he stretching his limbs. “We’re here for the weekend.”

“Fine, I’ll drive myself. Give me the keys.”

“I don’t think so,” he respond curtly, locking the car keys in his tackle box and making sure I can’t see him scramble the combination lock.

“Then I’m calling mom,” I fires back defiantly, whipping out my iphone.

But as I realizes that there’s no cell service here, my expression change to one of despair.

I saw Benjamin trying to resist the urge to smile. The off-the-grid element must be part of why he chose this particular campsite in the first place.

I fold her arms and glares at him. He just gives me my best fatherly smile and gets to work pitching the tent.

I’ve been sitting in the Jeep watching my dad set up the campsite for the next thirty minutes. My plan is to simply not get out of the car. I’m not going to move and Benjamin can’t fucking make me. I’ll stay here until he gives up and takes me home.

The problem is, Benjamin doesn’t seem to be giving up. In fact, he seems to be having the time of his life, pitching the tent and gathering wood and building a fire. Pissed as I am, I can’t help but be marginally impressed by his expertise. Even without anyone around to help him, he gets the camp set up ridiculously quickly.

Benjamin catches my eye and winks at me cheekily. I narrow my eyes at him and try to glare with even more ferocity. My stepdad returns to starting the fire and within minutes there’s a six-inch blaze. It’s early evening and still fairly warm, so Benjamin strips off his t-shirt as he stokes the flames.

For a moment I forget to be angry as I stare at his bare torso. He’s muscular as hell – obviously I’ve seen him shirtless before, but it always catches me off guard. All the hiking and swimming and chopping of wood has given him the physique of a god.

An evil, conniving god, but a god all the same.

I shift in the car seat, momentarily uncomfortable. I probably shouldn’t be thinking about my dad like that, but it’s not like I’m wrong. My friends call him a DILF, which I hate, but like, objectively he’s really fucking good looking. It’s just a fact.

Another thirty minutes pass and the temperature inside the car begins to drop. Since I had no idea the destination was a damn campsite, I only wore a thin jacket. I hug myself tightly, rubbing my arms and thighs repeatedly, trying to warm myself up a little.

Through the car window, I see Benjamin has lit a bonfire outside and he's even grilling two sausages. He knows they are my favorite!

He must have done it on purpose. He cuts off the car's heater and tempts me with my favorite food. So I have no choice but to leave the car.
