I thought reconnecting with my old college buddy would be nostalgic. I never expected his gorgeous, all-grown-up daughter to show up. Or for her to look at me like that. Now we’re sharing a secret that could destroy everything. One forbidden weekend. No turning back.
David and Mike became friends during their freshman year of college.
They were assigned to the same dorm room.
For weeks, they barely spoke.
David saw Mike as a strange geek, more interested in math than in girls.
They had absolutely nothing in common.
David was a star athlete.
He was the captain of the football team.
He was considered one of the most promising players, with real potential to go pro.
Both students and professors idolized him.
He could do no wrong.
If he ever broke a rule, people simply looked the other way.
Being a star player came with perks beyond fame and fans.
David could sleep with almost any girl he wanted.
And he did, nearly every night.
"Mind going for a walk?" he'd ask Mike with a grin and a nod.
Mike knew the drill.
He'd grab his backpack, head outside, and sit on a bench to study while David entertained a girl in their room.
Mike didn't really mind.
David never needed more than thirty minutes anyway.
Mike spent most of his time with his head in a book or writing complex code.
To anyone watching, he seemed to have no interest in women.
Secretly, though, Mike wished he had David's effortless charm with the opposite sex.
The problem was, Mike couldn't get lucky to save his life.
He struggled to even talk to girls.
When he finally worked up the courage to speak to one in the dorm, his awkward attempts usually led to silence and embarrassment.
Since starting college, he'd only been with one girl: Betty Mae, a volunteer librarian.
Not exactly what he'd call a major conquest.
David, feeling sorry for his roommate, started inviting Mike to parties.
Occasionally, Mike would get lucky with one of David's leftovers.
He never complained.
He took what he could get.
Now, twenty years later, the unlikely friends were still in touch, though they often went months without seeing each other.
Their lives were very different now.
The distance between them made it hard to find time to meet.
David never went pro.
He was now a full-time coach, living in Vermont with his wife and daughter.
Mike was a successful architect living in New York.
In many ways, their lives had switched.
Mike was now the bachelor enjoying unlimited funds and female company.
David was in Vermont, still bitter about never being drafted, licking his old wounds.
Time sure had a wicked sense of humor.
"Yeah, can't wait to see you, buddy," David said into the phone, forcing a smile. "I'll pick you up at the airport. Don't bother with a car."
"Ah, don't worry about it. I have a driver," Mike replied. "It's all handled. Really. Just relax. I'll be there in a few hours."
David shook his head after hanging up.
"Fuck's sake," he muttered under his breath.
He grabbed a cold beer and slumped onto the living room sofa.
"What's wrong?" his wife Vanessa asked, sensing his mood.
She walked over and sat beside him. "I thought you'd be excited to see Mike."
"Oh, I am," David sulked. "I just hate how he flaunts his money and success."
Vanessa sighed. "Here we go again..."
David knew she was annoyed.
She'd heard this rant many times before.
It always upset her.
It wasn't that he was unhappy.
He had a great family, a loving wife, and a wonderful daughter.
It was just hard to swallow, seeing the college geek do so well when David's own dreams had died long ago.
He reached over and squeezed his wife's leg affectionately.
