Chapter 1

My grandfather passed away today.

I went to find my husband, David, to tell him the news.

The moment I stepped inside, his precious Amelia slapped me hard across the face.

Stunned, I slapped her back—only to be mocked for being petty.

"Amelia's playing a mean girl in her new movie," David said, shrugging. "She's too sweet to actually hit anyone, so she's just practicing on you."

He was so sure I wouldn't leave him. But he forgot one thing: this marriage was arranged by Grandpa.

Now that Grandpa's gone… so am I.

"Amelia's just a girl—how much could it have hurt?" David scoffed. "She's an actress—her face is her career. You wouldn't understand that, stuck at home all day."

His cruel words hung in the air as everyone in the room snickered, staring openly at the red mark on my cheek.

Amelia leaned against David, pretending to be fragile, and carefully opened her hand. "Your skin is so rough—my hand hurts now."

David immediately took her hand, his face full of concern. "Baby, let me kiss it better."

Their little show drew another round of impressed murmurs.

"Dude, your wife is so obedient. You told her not to fight back, and she didn't!"

"Yeah, what's your secret? How do you keep her so tame?"

David looked me up and down and smirked. "With her? I don't need tricks. If she doesn't behave, I just won't go to her family's Thanksgiving dinner. Her grandpa would get pissed, and she'd come crawling back, begging me to go."

The room erupted in laughter again. I stood frozen by the door, my whole body going cold.

Before we got married, David was the one who pursued me. Why did everything change the moment I said yes—the moment I gave him what everyone wanted?

A tear fell onto my hand as I finally spoke. "David… Grandpa passed away."

Surrounded by his friends, David was busy feeding Amelia a piece of cake. He didn't even look my way.

I raised my voice, trembling. "David. Grandpa is dead."

My words were swallowed by the noise and laughter.

I couldn't take it anymore. I stepped forward, and Amelia immediately hid behind David like a scared kitten.

"David, this crazy woman is going to hit me again! She wants to ruin my face so I can't film!"

David instantly turned defensive, shielding his delicate flower. "Linda, it was just a joke! Let it go already!"

Then he glared at me. "The day you let me talk you into marrying me, you should've known what you were signing up for."

His words hit me like a physical blow. I almost stumbled.

"David, your grandfather saved my grandpa's life in the war. Grandpa arranged our marriage out of gratitude—he gave you everything he had to help you build your career. Am I really that worthless to you?"
