I dug my nails into my palms.

That was the jade bracelet my mother gave me before she died. Gabriel claimed he lost it during his move.

I spent seven hours searching in the storm that day and ended up with a high fever.

“The best was on her thesis defense day! Gabriel lied about getting drunk and beaten up at a bar.”

His friend laughed. “Harper rushed to the bar only to find no fight. I secretly recorded her begging her professor.”

I bit my lip hard.

I abandoned my six-month thesis preparation for Gabriel that day and had to delay my graduation.

Chloe chuckled. “Then there was the time we folded her three-day game design drafts into paper planes. She stayed up all night collecting them like a stray dog.”

Gabriel joined in. “What should we do this time?”

“Tell her Gabriel’s at the hospital. Make her rush over while we party without her!”

My phone buzzed immediately. A message from Gabriel:

【City General Hospital ER. Come now.】

Afraid of being discovered, I quickly left.

Two minutes later, Gabriel recalled the message as if regretting the lie.

I pretended I never received it and didn’t reply.

I had suspected this all along.
