During Christmas break, my husband insisted we attend his class reunion. By the time we got to the hotel, most of the guests had already arrived. The parking lot was lined with luxury cars, making our humble domestic car stick out like a sore thumb.
As we walked toward the entrance, I overheard a conversation: "I don't get it. Back in school, Logan was a big shot. How did he end up with someone like Fiona...?"
The conversation stopped abruptly, but the judgment in their voices was clear. My husband, instead of standing up for me, just smiled and mingled with his old classmates as if I wasn't even there.
After the banquet, the former campus beauty slowly approached and grabbed my husband's hand.
"Fiona," she said with a sly smile, "I'm interested in your husband. What would it take for you to let him go? Name your price."
I didn't get angry. I just laughed. "You might want to reconsider. Divorcing me isn't exactly without consequences."
If it hadn't been for my husband's relentless insistence, I never would've agreed to this reunion. I thought it might be nice to catch up with a few old faces, so I took a day off work to tag along.
But I never expected that, at dinner, someone would try to steal my husband right in front of everyone. What sent chills down my spine was how okay he seemed with it.
"Oh wow, you've really become smooth over the years," I overheard.
"The money is just a token of appreciation for taking care of Logan all these years," the woman said, her voice dripping with sweetness. "Think of it as compensation."
"Do you really think you can scare me with threats of jail?" she added. "Do you know who I am in New York?"
I was about to say something, but before I could, I saw my husband pulling the campus beauty into a hug.
"Qingqing, just take the money. It's better for everyone."
I stood frozen, watching them hold hands. A cold laugh escaped me.
"So, you two have been plotting this for a while, huh?"
Logan had been calling me non-stop, practically begging me to come to this reunion. Now it all clicked, they had planned to pressure me into agreeing to a divorce. No wonder he'd been distant since we got married; he'd always had someone else in mind.
As soon as the words left my mouth, Logan's face hardened.
"What nonsense! Adeline and I are in love! If she hadn't been forced to study abroad, we would've been together."
I couldn't believe my ears. Everyone knew she had dumped Logan years ago, but now it was a "mutual love story"? Whatever their history, Logan was still my husband. And I wasn't going to sit back and take this.
"Logan, do you even realize how serious infidelity is in a marriage?" I said, locking eyes with him. He couldn't even look me in the eye.
Before I could continue, the former campus beauty flung herself at him, acting all pitiful.
"Stop with the nonsense. You're just upset because the money isn't enough. Name your price, I'm not short on cash."
Looking at her, once the school's "queen bee" but now looking a little too comfortable, I almost laughed. This was all one big joke.
"Adeline, let me remind you: If Logan agrees to a divorce today, both of you will face legal consequences."
