Chapter 1

The October heat in Wiltspoon was relentless, though the crisp autumn breeze in the mornings and evenings offered some relief.

Evelyn Carter woke up early to prepare breakfast for her sister’s family before quietly slipping out with her birth certificate tucked securely in her bag.

"We should split everything from now on—living expenses, the mortgage, car payments! Your sister should be contributing more. Two thousand a month barely covers anything. She’s practically freeloading."

The words from her brother-in-law’s argument with her sister last night still echoed in her mind.

It was time for her to move out.

But there was only one way to ease her sister’s worries—marriage.

With no boyfriend in sight and needing a quick solution, Evelyn decided to take up Grandma Rose’s offer. She had saved the elderly woman by chance three months ago and learned that Grandma Rose was desperate to marry off her eldest grandson, Nathan Black, who, despite being successful, had no luck in love.

Twenty minutes later, Evelyn arrived at City Hall.

"Evelyn."

A familiar voice called out as soon as she stepped out of the car. It was Grandma Rose.

"Grandma Rose!"

Evelyn hurried over, her gaze landing on the tall, imposing figure standing beside the older woman.

This must be Nathan.

Up close, Evelyn was stunned.

Grandma Rose had described her grandson as a thirty-year-old workaholic with no time for relationships, leading Evelyn to assume he must be unattractive.

But she couldn’t have been more wrong.

Nathan was strikingly handsome, his sharp features accentuated by an air of aloofness. His cold demeanor made it clear he wasn’t thrilled to be here.

Evelyn’s eyes flicked to the black MPV parked nearby—a modest domestic brand, not some luxury vehicle. That reassured her. The financial gap between them couldn’t be too wide.

She co-owned a bookstore near Wiltspoon School and sold handmade crafts online, earning a steady income of around twenty thousand a month—enough to be considered middle-class in Wiltspoon.

Still, her brother-in-law had no idea. She had told her sister to keep three thousand for herself and only mention the remaining two thousand to him.

"Evelyn, this is my eldest grandson, Nathan," Grandma Rose said warmly. "He’s thirty and still single—too busy with work. He may seem cold, but he’s thoughtful deep down. You saved my life, and we’ve known each other for months. Trust me, I wouldn’t set you up with a bad man."

Nathan shot his grandmother a sideways glance but said nothing, as if long accustomed to her matchmaking attempts.

Evelyn knew Grandma Rose had nine grandsons but no granddaughters, which was why she had taken such a liking to her.

Blushing slightly, Evelyn extended her hand. "Hello, Mr. Black. I’m Evelyn Carter."

Nathan’s piercing gaze swept over her before he reluctantly shook her hand, his voice cool. "Nathan."

After the brief handshake, he checked his watch. "I don’t have much time. Let’s get this done."

Evelyn nodded.
