Benita's life falls apart when she catches her boyfriend cheating with her best friend. A one-night stand with a stranger, Adrian, seems like the perfect way to forget-until she walks into a business pitch and finds him sitting at the head of the table as the CEO of the company she's desperate to impress.
"Kevin?" Benita called hesitantly, as she turned the doorknob to her boyfriend’s apartment and walked in.
Her voice sliced through the silence.
“Kelvin.”
No answer.
Her brows furrowed.
He had cancelled their date, claiming he was working late, but something about his tone had felt… off.
Her unease deepened as she walked toward the bedroom, the sound of her breathing loud in her ears. The door was slightly ajar, and the soft glow of lamplight spilled into the hallway.
Then she heard it. A muffled giggle, followed by a low moan that made her stomach churn.
Her chest tightened.
With trembling fingers, she pushed the door open and froze in the doorway. The scene before her felt like a nightmare she couldn’t wake up from.
There, tangled in the sheets of their bed, were Kevin and Lisa.
Benita’s eyes widened in shock, her breath catching in her throat. Kevin was hovering over Lisa, his face buried in her neck. Lisa’s hands clung to his back, nails digging into his skin.
For a moment, neither of them noticed her. Then Lisa’s eyes flicked to the door, and her smug smile faltered.
“Benita!” Kevin scrambled off Lisa, grabbing at the sheets to cover himself. “This isn’t what it looks like!”
“Oh, really?” Benita’s voice trembled with a mix of anger and heartbreak. “Because it looks like you’re screwing my best friend!”
Kevin stumbled over his words, his face pale. “I— I can explain—”
Lisa, however, made no effort to hide. She leaned back against the pillows, an unapologetic smirk on her lips. “Why bother lying, Kevin? She already caught us.”
“Lisa?” Benita’s voice cracked. Her gaze darted between them, searching for any sign that this was some cruel prank. “How could you do this to me?”
Lisa shrugged, her expression cold. “Don’t act so surprised, Benita. Did you really think you could keep someone like Kevin satisfied?”
Benita flinched as if she’d been slapped. “Excuse me?”
Kevin reached out to her, desperation etched on his face. “Benita, please. It’s not what you think. It just happened—”
“It just happened?” Benita snapped, her voice rising. “You don’t accidentally end up in bed with someone! Especially not my best friend!”
Lisa rolled her eyes, her tone dripping with mockery. “Oh, come on. Stop playing the victim. If you’d paid more attention to Kevin, maybe he wouldn’t have come to me.”
Benita’s jaw dropped. “You’re blaming me for this?”
Lisa smirked. “Truth hurts, doesn’t it?”
Benita turned to Kevin, her eyes brimming with tears. “And you? Do you really think this is okay? Cheating on me with her?”
“I… I messed up,” Kevin stammered, his shoulders slumping. “But I love you, Benita. I’ll do whatever it takes to make this right.”
Lisa let out a bitter laugh. “Oh, please. You didn’t seem so in love with her last night when you were in my bed.”
Benita’s heart shattered into a million pieces. Her knees buckled, and she grabbed the doorframe to steady herself. “Last night? How long has this been going on?”
Kevin hesitated, his silence speaking volumes.
“It’s been over a year,” Lisa said casually, inspecting her nails.
Benita’s breath hitched. “A year?”
Kevin stepped forward, panic flashing in his eyes. “Benita, please—”
But she held up a hand, cutting him off. “Don’t. Just… don’t.”
Her vision blurred with tears as she turned and bolted out of the room. Kevin called after her, but she didn’t stop. She couldn’t.
The moment she stepped outside, the heavens opened up, and rain poured down in relentless sheets. The cold droplets mixed with the warmth of her tears, soaking her to the core.
