Chapter 1

I poured scalding hot water on my husband's secretary's hand.

He locked me in the sauna for eight hours.

Just as I was about to pass out, my husband finally had someone let me out.

He warned me coldly, "Consider this a small lesson. If I ever see you lay a hand on Nancy again, things won't end so nicely."

Lying on the stretcher, I calmly replied, "Okay."

The day I was discharged from the hospital, I stood outside our front door and could hear a party in full swing inside.

"Ashley, if you hate Josh so much, why don't you just divorce him?" asked Jessica, one of Ashley's friends.

Ashley clicked her tongue. "My mom said she's the only one who can file. If I do it, she'll hand the company over to someone else. I don't know what kind of spell he has over her."

His tone was dripping with impatience.

Nancy spoke up, "Mr. Montgomery, I think she's just after your family's money."

Everyone in the room murmured in agreement.

Instead of standing there feeling sorry for myself like I used to, I pushed the door open and walked right in.

The lively living room went dead silent.

Josh glared at me. "Well, look who decided to show up and kill the mood."

"It's Nancy's birthday today. Don't ruin our fun."

All eyes were on me, waiting for me to lose it—like I always did.

My outbursts were their favorite entertainment whenever Josh pushed my buttons.

But I guess I disappointed them this time.

After hearing what Josh said, I just replied calmly, "Okay," then headed straight to the bedroom and closed the door behind me.

Lying on the bed, I got a text from Josh's mother:

"Ashley, are you really planning to leave Josh?"

I turned and looked at the photo on his nightstand.

In it, he was smiling brightly, his arm wrapped around another woman's shoulders.

That picture had been there since the day I moved in.

Once, I accidentally knocked the frame over while cleaning, and Josh screamed at me.

"Mrs. Montgomery, you know I only got together with Josh to thank you. Now that he's moved past that incident, there's no reason for us to keep pretending."

Josh's mother sighed regretfully. "What a shame. I'll transfer the money I promised you after the separation."

I stared blankly at the photo for a moment before saying, "Okay, thank you."

After six years of staying for Josh's sake, it was finally time for me to start living my own life.

After hanging up, I stayed lost in thought for a long time.

Suddenly, the bedroom door swung open. Josh walked in with his arm around Nancy.

"Change the sheets. Nancy's staying over tonight."

Nancy looked at me with fake pity and said, "Mr. Montgomery, it's okay… I can just go home. I don't want to upset Ashley."

Josh shot me a sharp look. "Hurry up and change them. Stop wasting time."

I looked at the woman beside him—her face so much like the one in the photo—and let out a soft laugh.

If she could make him happy, then my job here was done.

From now on, we'd each go our separate ways.

Nancy whispered something into Josh's ear. A sly glint flashed in his eyes.

"Ashley, you don't have to move out. I've gotten used to you taking care of me all these years. You can stay."

I didn't even flinch at his humiliating words.

Under their watchful eyes, I walked over to the bedside cabinet, opened it, and pulled out a box of condoms.

I handed it to them. "We're not divorced yet. It wouldn't look good for the company if she got pregnant."
