The day before my art exam, a group of thugs dragged me into the woods and tortured me for an entire day and night.
By the time they found me, my legs were shattered and my face was drenched in blood.
My father missed my desperate calls—he was in a meeting. He wept with guilt when he saw me.
My brother called my medical team, urging them to arrange emergency surgery.
Half-conscious, I heard him whisper to our father, "Dad… isn't this too far? Even if we want to stop Serena from taking the art exam to clear the path for Caitlin, there has to be another way."
My father held me in the backseat, brushing the hair from my forehead. "Serena is always targeting Caitlin at school. This is the only way to make her back off and learn her place."
"Besides," he added, his voice low, "I'm letting her inherit the company. That should be more than enough to make up for this."
My body trembled uncontrollably. A cold dread shot through me.
The happy family I thought I had… the father and brother who doted on me… it was all a lie.
"The patient is critical," a doctor said. "We need to operate now."
But my father replied, "Wait until tomorrow."
The doctor hesitated. "Her legs are broken. Without immediate surgery, the bones may not set properly. She could have difficulty walking for life."
Even my brother tried to reason with him. "Serena's so young—you can't let her end up lame."
"I want her lame," my father said coldly. "We've come this far. I need to make sure Caitlin has a clear shot at that art exam. The only way Serena gives up dancing for good is if she can't walk properly."
"Just… have the doctors dress her wounds for now."
Lying on the hospital bed, I bit my lip hard, but a sob broke through.
My father—Reynand Davis—the man who always treated me like his precious little girl, now filled me with pure terror.
I finally understood why he started showering me with affection after my mother died.
It wasn't out of love or guilt. It was all part of his plan to ruin me—to make way for his illegitimate daughter.
And my brother, Sebastian… the one I adored. His real loyalty was always to Caitlin. Not me.
The two men I trusted most had betrayed me, all for the same girl.
The more I realized, the harder it became to breathe. I choked back another sob.
Just then, my father rushed into the room. "Did you have a nightmare?" he asked, his voice soft. "Don't be afraid, Serena. Daddy's here."
He wiped my tears and patted my back, telling me stories like he used to when I was small.
Reynand always knew how to play the loving father in front of others.
Sebastian ran out to get the doctor. "Use the best anesthesia," he insisted. "I don't want my little sister to suffer."
Their faces were full of concern. It looked so real.
