I thought my boyfriend’s spa retreat was a marriage proposal, but he offered me to his bosses as a business bargaining chip. Now I discover he’s trapping a new victim. This girlfriend will turn the hot springs into their nightmare.
Lately, Liam had been acting… different. Like, weirdly obsessed. Out of nowhere, he became completely fixated on hot springs. So when he eagerly invited me to his company's spa retreat, I was caught off guard.
"You're going to love it, darling, it's the ultimate relaxation experience," he said, but his face showed something I'd never seen before. A mix of nerves and excitement danced just beneath the surface. That slight, sly smile at the corner of his mouth… it felt like he was hiding something.
Little did I know, this innocent-sounding getaway was anything but.
My name's Sophia Evans. I'm 26, a freelance writer by trade, and pretty observant by nature. And Liam… he'd been acting off for weeks. Always rushing out after work, coming home late looking completely drained. Whenever I asked where he'd been, he'd avoid my gaze and mumble something about work.
Then yesterday, his energy totally shifted. He pulled me aside, eyes bright. "Babe! My company's organizing a special spa retreat this weekend. I got you a spot, you have to come."
I'd never met any of his coworkers. The idea of squeezing into a swimsuit and making small talk in a hot spring sounded… awkward at best.
"C'mon, Sophia," he pressed. "You're always typing away at your computer or curled up on the couch with a book. Your muscles must be tied in knots. This is the perfect chance to unwind!" He paused, flashing that charming grin. "Besides, all my colleagues know I have a gorgeous, talented girlfriend. Showing you off will make me the envy of the whole office."
Normally, I'd say no. I'm introverted, group events aren't really my thing. But a few days ago, I accidentally saw Liam's phone light up with a message from a female coworker. She'd sent photos of herself in a tight workout outfit. The tone felt… flirty. Questionable.
Liam and I have been together for years. Things were steady. Our families were starting to ask about marriage. So yeah, maybe I was on edge. Maybe that's why, after a brief hesitation, I said yes. Maybe this trip was my chance to see what was really going on.
"Alright," I told him. "But you have to help me pick a swimsuit. I'm not embarrassing myself in front of your colleagues."
His whole face lit up. "Of course, babe. I'll choose something perfect. You're going to look absolutely stunning in the springs." He pulled me into a hug, and for a second, I thought I saw something unreadable flicker behind his eyes.
"Honestly, Sophia," he murmured, "you have a more captivating figure than any goddess. None of my coworkers can hold a candle to you."
I tilted my head and rolled my eyes playfully. "You sure know how to lay it on thick. I wonder how many girls have heard that one."
